Since its debut, the Ford Explorer ST has set a new standard for high-performance three-row SUVs. Ford has kept its ear to the ground and listened to its fans, and that’s why the 2022 Explorer ST will be the first to come standard with rear-wheel drive.
“Four-wheel-drive capability is great if you need it, but if you don’t, you shouldn’t have to pay for it,” said Ford Explorer Marketing Manager Lee Newcombe. “These changes to the Explorer lineup were guided by what our customers told us they wanted.”
Ford also understands that some drivers want the bold look of the Explorer ST but don’t need all 400 horsepower that you get from the twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost® V6. To accommodate those customers, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line offers the same style of the Ford Performance SUV but equips it instead with the 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost®.
To keep the ever-popular Explorer ever-fresh, Ford is rolling out a ton of additional updates for 2022. That includes making the 400-horsepower V6 standard for the King Ranch and Platinum, giving you the choice between a second-row bench or captain’s chairs at no additional cost, and adding a pair of new exterior colors — Stone Blue and Burgundy Velvet.

For more than 30 years, the Ford Explorer has been the gold standard for rugged, stylish three-row SUVs. The long legacy of America’s bestselling SUV of all time adds another incredible new chapter with the 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline — the most off-road-capable Explorer Ford has ever built.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline is an easy choice if you have a taste for excitement. In addition to a powerful 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, the Explorer Timberline adds a new Torsen® limited-sleep rear differential that directs torque to the wheel with the best grip while minimizing wheelspin.
Adding high-sidewall Bridgestone Dueler P265/65R-18 all-terrain tires with a unique, off-road-optimized tread pattern, the 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline raises the ride height by 0.8 inches for even more confidence going over rough terrain. Helping on that front is the standard Terrain Management System™, which includes Trail and Deep Snow/Sand drive modes.
As if this isn’t enough, the new Ford Explorer Timberline is one of the most unique-looking versions of the rugged three-row ever made. The Explorer Timberline sports a distinct Forged Green Metallic exterior that plays beautifully off the high-gloss painted aluminum wheels and Carbonized Gray grille. Inside, the Explorer Timberline features a Deep Cypress interior with Deep Tangerine contrast stitching on the seats and Stone Mesh and Satin Silver Twilight details on the dash.
